20 Movies Critics HATE But Audiences LOVE
9. The Boondock Saints
The Boondock Saints is in many respects the quintessential post-Tarantino movie - the poster child for the dozens of self-consciously hip, edgy, dialogue-heavy thrillers that took clear inspiration from Pulp Fiction throughout the late 1990s.
And critics absolutely loathed most films that followed this trend, including The Boondock Saints, which was dragged by the press for its vulgarity, its gleeful violence, and generally unpleasant tone.
But audiences, on the other hand, couldn't get enough of it.
Though initially a box office failure due to its dire theatrical rollout, the film later became a surprise cult hit on home video due to positive word-of-mouth.
And indeed, The Boondock Saints has an incredible 91% audience rating, making it clear that general viewers have a far greater appreciation for Troy Duffy's brutally off-the-wall vision, and found the film to be intensely cool in all the ways that critics found it tough to sit through.
However, 2009's sequel The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day closed the gap considerably, as it was predictably panned by critics while drawing more surprisingly mixed responses from fans.
