10. Mel Gibson Probably Won't Direct Suicide Squad 2
The Rumour
Despite being linked to the job quite unexpectedly - and surprisingly publicly - Mel Gibson is no longer the front runner to direct Suicide Squad 2. Instead, Warner Bros are looking at Jaume Collet-Serra (The Shallows) and Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland) as their new top candidates.
Response
He might be a great director, but it was always going to be a difficult sell to have Gibson involved in such a tent-pole comic book movie, given that he so publicly trashed the genre not so long ago (and reserved special "praise" for Batman v Superman). That bridge was hard to unburn.
In terms of the new links, Collet-Serra's The Shallows was a surprisingly good addition to the over-saturated shark attack genre last year and he has lots of experience with action (and some with horror) - as well, rather worryingly, as having directed Goal II.
Fleischer, meanwhile, has a more patchy track record having made the excellent Zombieland, the okay 30 Minutes Or Less and the awful Gangster Squad. He has at least pulled it back with the wonderful Santa Clarita Diet - which he directed two episodes of - but he'd be a harder sell.
Not that either of them really look like comic book movie directors - but that hasn't hurt the MCU's choices so far...
