20 Most Disappointing Horror Movies of the 2020s (So Far)

2. MaXXXine

Maxxxine Mia Goth

Considering that Ti West hit two undeniable home runs with X and Pearl, there wasn't much of an inkling that he might whiff a great slasher trilogy at the final hurdle.

Now, it certainly didn't help that, after the surprise success of West's two previous Mia Goth-starring slashers, expectations were raised high for the trilogy-capping MaXXXine.

But rather than deliver a threequel that fused the grit of X and the character-driven psychology of Pearl, MaXXXine ventured off in a rather different direction, functioning as an only fitfully entertaining giallo-inspired thriller.

Mia Goth gives it her all because of course she does, but frankly the script doesn't have nearly as much meat on its bones this time around, ensuring that despite Goth's best efforts, Maxine's journey to stardom ends on something of a false note.

There are a few memorably grisly kills but the third act in particular is a shockingly damp squib, resolving with a thunderously obvious, brutally underwhelming "big" reveal.
