20 Most Disappointing Horror Movies of the 2020s (So Far)
1. Night Swim
And finally we have Night Swim, which proves just how tough it can be to adapt a creepy short film into a successful feature.
Bryce McGuire and Rod Blackhurst's original 2014 short about a cursed swimming pool was a fiercely effective four-minute romp, and honestly, it's easy to see why Blumhouse sought it out for the feature film treatment.
And honestly, in the right hands a knowingly camp slasher film in which the killer just so happens to be a swimming pool could've been an absolute riot. Throw in two excellent lead actors like Wyatt Russell and Kerry Condon and you've got a stew cooking.
But Night Swim's grandest sin is that, for a film about a murderous swimming pool, it's staggeringly boring, serving up limply unimaginative PG-13 kills.
It bafflingly also dares to take itself dead seriously, no matter the inherent absurdity of its setup.
The amount of egregious narrative padding here suggests that the filmmakers simply struggled to translate their bite-sized concept into a fully formed feature. A willingness to embrace the concept's B-movie silliness would've gone a long way, though.
