20 Movies That Weren't Worth The Wait

8. The Dark Tower

A film adaptation of Stephen King's legendary novel series The Dark Tower began development in 2007, but the tricky-to-adapt nature of King's source material resulted in a prolonged gestation period where the project passed through the hands of Universal, Paramount, Warner Bros., and Lionsgate before finally landing at Sony.

After J.J. Abrams and Ron Howard both failed to crack it, the film was finally co-written and directed by a more left-field choice, Nikolaj Arcel (A Royal Affair).

But the Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey-starring Dark Tower movie was savaged by critics and fans of the books alike, the 95-minute runtime making it agonisingly clear that the film had been cut to ribbons in post-production, resulting in a frantic, scarcely coherent end product.

At least it didn't stop Hollywood from appreciating the potential of a better adaptation, as Mike Flanagan is now working on a multi-season TV series, which obviously has a far greater likelihood of succeeding given the several great King adaptations Flanagan already has under his belt.
