20 Movies That Weren't Worth The Wait

7. Independence Day: Resurgence

Considering that Independence Day was the highest-grossing film of 1996 and an undeniable pop-culture staple, it's frankly shocking that a couple of sequels weren't pumped out by the early 2000s.

But it took a full 20 years for Independence Day: Resurgence to finally come to fruition, a result of numerous scripts being tossed out and many failed attempts to lock down Will Smith to reprise his starring role.

Smith ultimately declined to return in order to make Suicide Squad instead, and the decision to forge ahead without him is one of the sequel's biggest missteps.

Smith's presence is sorely missed throughout Resurgence, though there's ultimately precious little in the sequel's script that gets anywhere close to the B-movie thrills of the original.

Independence Day: Resurgence is a tired, charmless follow-up that took way too long to come out, and even director Roland Emmerich later admitted that he should've killed the movie after Smith opted not to return. Tough to argue with that assessment.
