It's great when a movie unexpectedly comes out of nowhere and bites you on the ass.
Slither did exactly that for me this week, it's the first horror film I have truly enjoyed from start to finish for
ages.To be fair though it's more like a mix of comedy/horror than full out terror. Slither is more
Evil Dead 2 than
The Exorcist. Speaking of Evil Dead, one of the the movie lead's
Nathan Fillon reminds me so much of
Bruce Campbell, and that's a huge compliment to the guy. He has an easiness about him, a likeable charm for the simple art of doing nothing. I love this guy's work. Slither is such a fun movie. It creepied me out in places with it's "Cronenberg on crack" body horror scenes but then also made me laugh at them at the same time. It never takes itself too seriously like most of the souless horror flicks these days strive for (thank god!) and instead treats us to a film that isn't trying to be anything more than what it is. It's dumb, silly and mindless. But that's a GOOD thing with this film, I'm so sick of seeing stuff like
Black Christmas and
The Grudge 2 stinkin' up our cinema's with the same old/same old horror routine. Slither is a breathe of fresh air! Briefly then, the plot of film is focused on a guy who after being sexually rejected one night by his wife, goes for a walk round the woods where he meets a slimy creature that looks as if it has fallen from the sky. The wormy thing gets inside his brain and his personality and body starts to gradually change into an oversized blob over the course of the film. He goes out infecting all the resident's in the town as the worms breed and spread to over people. This is clearly one big homage to the low budget monster movies of the 70's and 80's which we rarely get to see these days. I'm glad I caught this one before the end of the year.

Slither is a creepy but extremely fun horror/comedy that works for me where
Shaun of the Dead didn't. I was never scared or creepied out in Shaun but Slither has a nice blend of both and believe me, the less you know about what happens in the film the more you will enjoy it. Highly recommended for those horror fans sick of the genre's downward spiral.
