Enola Holmes Review: 7 Ups & 3 Downs
5. It's A Proudly Feminist Spin On Sherlock Holmes
The film has a strong feminist streak cutting through it, and while there are those who will perhaps find it a little too thickly laid, it ultimately confirms Enola as a strong, resourceful female lead for young women to aspire to.
Much of the peripheral plot focuses on Enola resisting the masculine traditions and structures imposed upon her, namely the expectation of marriage and family.
She enthusiastically shirks this, yet at the same time isn't averse to a potential romantic entanglement with Viscount Lord Tewksbury either.
She can have it all should she want it, the film tells us, largely because she was raised to be smart and tough by her mother.
Far from a flowery, inferior iteration of her more famous older brother, Enola manages to be capable as hell while also scrubbing up terrifically when the time calls for her to don some finery.
