13. Kingsman: The Golden Circle
One of the great tragedies of cinema was watching Kick-Ass 2 crash and burn after the original was so transformative and refreshing. The same can be said of Kingsman: The Golden Circle, which rather squandered all of the good new additions designed to make it bigger, bolder and better than its predecessor.
The cast - including newcomers Channing Tatum, Julianne Moore, Jeff Bridges, Halle Berry and Pedro Pascal - is excellent, but hardly any of them make too great a showing of themselves. The problem - as with Kick-Ass 2 - is the material: once more the director (this time Matthew Vaughn again) decided to distill the wrong part of the original down to create an over-brewed exercise in crassness.
Rather than relying on the juxtaposition of modern, urban grit and James Bond parody, The Golden Circle replaces plot with vulgarity and irreverence with nastiness. The charm, sadly, is all but completely gone.
