Every 2018 Oscar Nominee Ranked From Worst To Best

21. I, Tonya

I Tonya Margot Robbie
Neon

Nominations: 3 - Best Actress (Margot Robbie), Best Supporting Actress (Allison Janney), Best Film Editing

I, Tonya could so easily have been another down-the-line biopic, but thanks to a marvelous marriage of game actors, a terrific script and pin-sharp editing, this is one of the more alluring and effervescent movies of its kind from the last few years.

Smartly taking the conventional narrative of Tonya Harding's life and turning it on its head, the movie gives Harding her moment in the spotlight to tell her side of the story. Every scene crackles with wit and humour, and in its best moments the movie even has flashes of Scorsese.

Margot Robbie is splendid as Harding but Allison Janney steals every scene she's in as her cruel mother LaVona, while Sebastian Stan is also fantastic in an against-type role as Tonya's abusive husband Jeff.

The CGI for Robbie's ice skating stunt double is horrendous, but everything else is top-notch.
