Every 2020 Movie That Could Make A Billion Dollars
1. Fast And Furious 9
Only the third franchise on this list to be on a streak of billion-dollar hits, the mainline Fast and Furious movies are always going to be safe bets to join that esteemed club, and the upcoming ninth instalment is no different.
Furious 7 and The Fate of the Furious both pushed past $1 billion with ease, and there are few reasons to doubt that Fast 9 has enough juice in the tank to get there too, especially considering that the last two films grossed $390 million in China alone. That's almost half of the amount needed from just one single territory.
As an added bonus, Fast 9 is the penultimate film in the main saga. Like with Bond, if it's marketed as a finale of sorts - "witness the beginning of the end!" - then that will build even more hype around the project.
The only thing that could diminish its gross is the absence of The Rock, but even if Fast 9 makes $200 million less than Fate, it will still land on the right side of a billion (plus, the casting of John Cena seems like an attempt to fill that Rock-shaped hole).
Is there a chance it doesn't hit a billion? Absolutely. It's releasing in a busy window, and the eighth film made less than the seventh, a possible sign of diminishing returns. But looking at 2020's smattering of candidates, Fast 9 automatically accelerates to the top of the billion-dollar race.
