Every Best Actress Oscar Movie Winner Of The 21st Century Ranked

19. Renée Zellweger - Judy (2019)

Monster Charlize Theron
BBC Films

Who should have won: Saoirse Ronan - Little Women.

It should have been Saoirse Ronan's year, but in the end Best Actress went to the easy pick: Renée Zellweger, whose touching portrayal of Judy Garland was always destined to win thanks to the Academy's love for praising every biopic under the sun.

Though her performance is admittedly dampened by the the film's mediocre execution, Zellweger's portrayal of Garland in her final years is compassionate and strong-willed, capturing the star's wit and uncertainty as she tries to cling to her fading career.

Judy is as predictable and unchallenging as the vast majority of modern biopics, but you've got to give Zellweger credit for so confidently acting as its tragic, lovable centre. It's an obvious win, but not an unforgiveable one.

Aidan Whatman hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
