No, it’ll never be forgiven for beating an unnominated Vertigo to the punch, but Gigi’s stunning portrayal of Paris and the work of Leslie Caron as its carefree protagonist keep it afloat where it counts. It’s a very minor Best Picture through-and-through, but its palpable joy is hard to ignore.
