Every Best Picture Oscar Winner Ranked Worst To Best

25. Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King (2003)

One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest
New Line Cinema/Warner Bros. Pictures

Every instalment of Peter Jackson's groundbreaking Lord of the Rings trilogy was nominated for Best Picture, so it made sense that the Academy would finally let him take the statue home for its concluding chapter, The Return of the King.

Bringing every plotline together in truly epic fashion, Jackson's threequel features everything that made his Tolkien adaptations so great, balancing its riotous action sequences with quiet character drama, stunning CGI, and awesome practical effects that have allowed the films to age like a fine wine.

The Return of the King won a staggering eleven Oscars (out of eleven nominations, no less), and, honestly, who could blame the Academy for going all in? Two decades later, and it's still the best blockbuster trilogy ever made.
