Many of Murphy's greatest roles find him cast as souls drifting alone to grapple with forces out of their control, and there's perhaps no better example of that than his turn as physicist Robert Capa in the lonely sci-fi flick Sunshine.

In his second collaboration with Danny Boyle, Murphy plays Capa as a man tasked with detonating a bomb that will reignite the dead sun, and with this expectation he carries a weary sense of his own mortality. Murphy is laconic in the role, but his face captures everything - his reckoning with faith, the weight of his impossible mission.

Sunshine may fall apart toward the end, but Murphy's enrapturing portrayal of a man trapped by malevolence never wavers.
