Every Coen Brothers Movie Ranked Worst To Best

9. Raising Arizona (1987)

Inside Llewyn Davis
20th Century Fox

The Brothers' second film, Raising Arizona couldn't be further removed from their debut effort - but that's exactly what makes it work so well when looking at their work as a whole. Whilst Blood Simple is cold, dark and bleak, Raising Arizona is a simply divine comedy bursting with originality, wholesomeness and solid humour.

The film follows a criminal called H.I. (Nicolas Cage) who falls in love and marries a police officer (Holly Hunter) and attempts to turn his life around. Things (of course) take a turn for the worst, as the couple find themselves drawn to a life of crime and at one point kidnap a baby in response to their own inability to have kids.

With great comedic work from Cage, Hunter and the always dependable John Goodman, Raising Arizona is mad-cap fun front-to-back, and in spite of some moments which feel a touch overstretched, it's a great little film that still holds up in entertainment value to this day.
