Every Coen Brothers Movie Ranked Worst To Best

5. Inside Llewyn Davis (2013)

Inside Llewyn Davis
CBS Films

All of the Coen Brothers' movies work as character studies, analysing their protagonists whilst the often surreal events of the plot transpire around them. Inside Llewyn Davis, a recent gem bursting with heart and humour, might just be their best ever character piece, and in turn one of their very best films.

Llewyn Davis (Oscar Isaac) is a folk singer struggling to keep his personal life from falling apart whilst simultaneously reaching for his dreams of success. Though this write-up may make it seem like a nice hopeful slice-of-life drama where, in the end, everything works out, the Coen Brothers' script allows the film to maintain its engaging hook whilst being genuinely quite bleak and sombre in its execution.

Throughout the film, Davis is beaten up, left homeless, abandoned and without prospects. But still he goes on, making his way through the city, singing and trying his damnedest to keep his affairs in order. Isaac's mesmerising performance, mixed with a tightly-wound script and a stunning soundtrack, makes Inside Llewyn Davis an absolute marvel.
