Every Coen Brothers Movie Ranked Worst To Best

12. True Grit (2010)

Inside Llewyn Davis
Paramount Pictures

A remake of the John Wayne classic of the same name, True Grit gives the Coen Brothers the chance to show off their talents in the western genre. Jeff Bridges takes the lead role once held by Wayne, and he's joined by a striking, Oscar-nominated Hailee Steinfeld as Mattie Ross, a girl out to avenge her father's death.

It is the relationship between Mattie and Bridges' grizzled Marshal Rooster Cogburn that drives the bulk of the plot forward, allowing the Coen Brothers to elevate the western revenge drama to new heights with a surprising and well-written relationship. With this comes some sweeping backdrops, solid action sequences and great supporting turns from Matt Damon and Josh Brolin.

The only real issue with the film is the fact that the Brothers' desire to keep the original's signature western tone and plot means that the script is somewhat lacking in their usual level of twists, turns and rapid-fire witticisms. Aside from that, True Grit is a solid addition to their CV, and makes for a great watch despite its sometimes un-Coen-y script.
