5. Man of Steel
Score: 56%
Critic Consensus: "Man of Steel's exhilarating action and spectacle can't fully overcome its detours into generic blockbuster territory."
Man of Steel was the beginning of the DCEU, with Zack Snyder and Henry Cavill bringing Superman back to the big screen for the first time since Brandon Routh's portrayal in 2006's Superman Returns. The film focuses on Superman's origin as he battles General Zod (Michael Shannon) and his forces, who look to turn Earth into a new version of Krypton.
The film was extremely decisive due to the amount of collateral damage during Superman's fight with Zod, and the hero's choice to kill the Kryptonian general in the story's closing moments. Man of Steel displayed a darker version of Superman which did not sit well with many fans. However, Snyder did address the collateral damage in Batman v Superman, using it as motivation for Bruce Wayne to go after the Last Son of Krypton.
While not the perfect film, it did feature a different version of Superman's origins which was fresh and interesting. Cavill's performance as Clark Kent was also commendable, as were the performances of Shannon and Amy Adams, who brought a new dynamic to Lois Lane.
