Every DCEU Film Ranked From Worst To Best

4. Shazam!

Wonder Woman 2017
Warner Bros.

One of the franchise's most critically acclaimed films, Shazam is a supremely effective superhero comedy.

Not only is it a delightful, funny and endlessly charming story of wish-fulfilment with loveable characters and cracking jokes galore, the film is also, crucially, a surprisingly scary, dark and emotional ride.

Thanks to its well written script, Shazam is a remarkable blend of light and dark, which allows it to be a lot of fun without it ever feeling frivolous. The cast (bar Mark Strong, who's uncharacteristically bad as the main villain) is also excellent, with some strikingly talented young actors stealing the entire film away from the adult cast.

It doesn't avoid all of the DCEU's common problems. As with other movies in this franchise, the CGI is inconsistent, it's too long and yet again, the villain sucks. Accusations of a villain problem are still thrown at the Marvel Cinematic Universe but the DCEU has a far, far bigger villain problem than that franchise ever did.

Still, Shazam is a very fun and well-executed film that proved Aquaman was no fluke and that the DCEU's course-correct was still on track.
