16. Atlantis: The Lost Empire

Given the diversity of source material Disney have drawn upon over the decades, it's perhaps surprising to discover that they didn't tackle the science fiction genre until Atlantis: The Lost Empire, their 41st release which hit theatres in the summer of 2001.

It would be nice to be able to say the wait was worthwhile, but unfortunately Atlantis: The Lost Empire is at best a middling entry into Disney's canon. Telling the story of a young man who discovers a book which is said to reveal the location of the titular mythical city, it's an animated film which is big on spectacle but sadly comes up short on substance.

It's also from an era noteworthy for its mixed attempts to fuse traditional animation with CGI (when most audiences were looking for the latter exclusively). In retrospect this attempt to blend the old with the new looks very dated, not helped by a screenplay which erected rather than pushed boundaries.
