12. The Princess And The Frog
Disney returned to traditional hand drawn animation after taking a break to focus on CGI, with The Princess And The Frog, based on the classic fable from the Brothers Grimm, The Frog Prince, in which a young waitress called Tiana (voiced by Anika Noni Rose) kisses a frog prince only to be transformed into a frog herself.
Directed by Disney veterans Ron Clements and Jon Musker (of Aladdin and The Little Mermaid fame), The Princess And The Frog bears all the hallmarks of classic cel animated Disney: the vibrant colour schemes and fluid animation, replete with attention to detail; the peppy dialogue and musical numbers; and the overarching theme of a protagonist coming to understand herself.
As great as The Princess And The Frog is, it faced tough competition at the 2009 Academy Awards, losing out on the Best Animated Feature Oscar to a very worthy competitor: Pixar's Up.
