11. Fantasia 2000
Fantasia 2000 was the very first release from Walt Disney Animation Studios, arriving in theaters on January 1st to kickstart the new millennia with a return to the themes and style of their classic 1940s feature, Fantasia.
As with Fantasia, Fantasia 2000 isn't concerned with telling a conventional story, but rather with exploring the art of animation itself, setting sumptuous imagery to a series of classical music pieces. Abstract animation accompanies pieces by Beethoven, Igor Stravinsky's Firebird Suite sets the tone for a segment about a sprite and an elk, while the works of Goethe and stories from the Bible provide the substance for other segments.
Fantasia and Fantasia 2000 are the closest Disney has come to the idea of "pure cinema", and it was fitting that such a visually ambitious project was the first animated feature to be screened in IMAX theaters.
