13. Treasure Planet

Disney returned to science fiction in 2002 with Treasure Planet, after a disappointing foray into the genre with 2001's Atlantis: The Lost Empire. Merging traditional animation with CGI elements, Treasure Planet took Robert Louis Stevenson's classic novel Treasure Island and transported the setting to outer space.

Treasure Planet's integration of 2D and 3D animation succeeds where other films such as Titan A.E. failed. It's a shame that Disney films don't venture into space more often, as it is clear that when they get it right they're quite capable of crafting fleshed-out science fiction worlds.

It might not live up to the high standards of the source material, but what Treasure Planet does is capture effectively the core themes of the story as well as the spirit of adventure which drives protagonist Jim Hawkins to venture from the familiar and into the unknown.
