2. The Evil Dead (1981)

Here it is, the film that started it all!

One of the best things about The Evil Dead is that you can still show it to people nowadays and get a great reaction from them. Fans of the horror genre have been spoiled and desensitized thanks to years of growing changes in the industry, with many older movies losing their power. But this Sam Raimi classic holds up surprisingly well.

There's no denying the visual effects certainly are dated, but the depravity makes the visuals incredibly charming, as there's a sense of the practical work and passion that went into making them. Plus, the intense atmosphere and pacing still packs a spooky punch. Overall, the film also thrives on being simple. It doesn't muck around with subplots, set-up, or complicated relationships. It just goes in and gives you a scary time.

It's mind-blowing to think that this was Sam Raimi's first movie, as his expertise as a director is evident. His visual language and frantic camerawork, which would become his signature style, are noticeable from the first minute. This is another reason why The Evil Dead holds up so well.

The Evil Dead deserves its reputation as a horror classic, though one thing the movie does lack is the franchise's signature humour. But don't worry, that's coming next.
