Every Francis Ford Coppola Movie Ranked Worst To Best

7. Peggy Sue Got Married (1986)

The Godfather 2 Robert De Niro
TriStar Pictures

Once more, Coppola finds himself aligned with his nephew Nicolas Cage and crafting a story based around regret, youth and the possibilities of starting over. Peggy Sue Got Married, inspired by the Buddy Holly song of the same name, finds Peggy (Kathleen Turner) transported back in time and confronted with the what-could-have-beens of her high school golden years.

Peggy is bitter and disillusioned about her life, particularly in regards to her disappointing husband (Cage), but back in the days of old she has a chance to live life to the fullest, and maybe find herself along the way.

As far as 80s comedy-dramas go, Peggy Sue Got Married is a fairly typical affair, but would rank this highly for the charm of its leading cast alone (which includes a young Jim Carrey, as well as Helen Hunt and Joan Allen). It's funny and sweet, refusing to be overly melodramatic or sappy, and makes for Coppola's best tale about the joys and hardships of growing up.
