When Guardians of the Galaxy first came out in 2014, people didn’t know what to expect. This was a superhero team most didn’t know much about; they were niche, and even some dedicated comic book fans didn’t have much attachment to them.

However, James Gunn was able to bring a unique charm to the unexpected hit film in part due to the great protagonists in the form of the Guardians themselves.

The story of these characters is a classic among superhero teams, the tale of opposites learning to work together and, consequently, finding a family-type love between each other.

Peter Quill is fun and goofy but has also gone through a lot of pain due to the death of his mother; Gamora has gone through similar issues with her father Thanos, and these kinds of problems can be seen in all the other Guardians, which makes their bond feel even more special.

By the end of the second film, you grow a massive attachment to each individual member, which makes emotional moments like Gamora's death hit even harder.
