Every Hellraiser Movie Ranked From Worst To Best
2. Hellraiser III: Hell On Earth
After exploring visceral terror and subtle chills in the first two movies, Hellraiser exploded into the mainstream with the third, and the result is a disfigured mash-up of action and horror - but an entertaining one at least.
Hell on Earth is more concerned with nightclub massacres and exploding police cars than remaining true to Barker’s vision, but this is Pinhead’s movie from start to finish.
The head Cenobite begins the threequel entombed in marble and must rely on his wits to trick sleazy club owner JP Munro into freeing him so he can wreak all havoc on the world. Once loose, he’s deadlier than an army of Jason Voorhees’, yet somehow manages to retain that otherworldly elegance and sophistication.
Although this represents a dumbing down of what Hellraiser originally stood for - an exploration of that thin line separating pain and pleasure - it’s enjoyable in the same way as a popcorn-fuelled Friday the 13th marathon on Halloween night.
