Run All Night features Neeson playing his biggest all-out villain, a bitter, drunken killer who has no issue with his past, but can't escape the fact his son wants nothing to do with him. He's over-the-hill and pitiful, and a strong case could be made he's never been so unlikeable on-screen.

But that's exactly what makes Collet-Serra's thriller work, because whilst he's a bad man whose fate is sealed, Neeson is so frank and vulnerable in the role you can't help but root for him and his relationship with his estranged family, who are in the crosshairs of Neeson's vengeful old gangster buddies.

With an enormous supporting cast rounded out by Ed Harris, Joel Kinnaman, Nick Nolte, Common, and Vincent D'Onofrio, Run All Night transcends its simple premise and convoluted first act to become one of Neeson's most affecting thrill rides, and an underseen gem you should definitely seek out.
