Every Marvel Comic Book Movie Ranked From Worst To Best
17. Captain America: The First Avenger
Looking back at The First Avenger, it's a terrible shame that Captain America's story of a man trapped out of time required him to be transported to the future quite so quickly. The period setting and the war scenes in particular offer something no comic book movie had done to date (or has done since) and there was plenty of scope to see more from Cap and the Howling Commandoes on that timeline.
Anyway, The First Avenger was the first really confident strike towards a shared Avengers universe. It might not have kicked off the MCU, but it marked Marvel's intention to make the long-mooted Avengers ensemble. Mercifully, Joe Johnson's origin movie proved to be brilliant and there was no turning back.
The script is brilliant, Chris Evans' performance as Steve Rogers marries the necessary vulnerability with that faintly regal spirit Cap requires and Hugo Weaving is a gloriously pulpy villain who should have returned by now by rights.
The best testament to the film is that it's easily one of the most rewatchable films in the entire Marvel pantheon.
