Directed:

Iron Man (2008) and Iron Man 2 (2010).

The very first MCU director, actor and director Jon Favreau had only directed two big-budget films before Iron Man but he did do a terrific job with the movie. As well as star Robert Downey Jr, we have Favreau to thank for getting the MCU off to such an incredible start.

The original MCU film, Iron Man, is very well shot and is absolutely full of tight, tense and coherent action sequences that feel genuinely thrilling but never over-the-top or exhausting, proving Favreau a natural blockbuster director. Watching the first Iron Man back now, it confirms the upcoming Lion King remake is in safe hands.

Iron Man 2 was unfortunately a disappointment ruined by studio interference. Favreau's directing is fine and it wasn't his fault, but nevertheless he was unhappy with the film and left the MCU after that. That was very unfortunate, since not only did the franchise lose a skilled director but the next thing Favreau did was the ill-judged Cowboys and Aliens.

Favreau has also given a good performance as Happy Hogan. It's a shame he left, but he'll always be an important figure in the MCU's history.
