Directed:

Doctor Strange (2016).

Scott Derickson has mainly worked on horror films and was a highly unusual choice to direct Doctor Strange. This was, come to think of it, quite a gamble, but it luckily it ended up being a smart move; his horror sensibilities and the psychedelic mania of Doctor Strange made for a good match.

Bringing a genre filmmaker with a different sort of visual style was a smart move and, while aided by the incredible special effects, Derickson's work on Doctor Strange was excellent. Thanks to his stylish and hallucinatory cinematography Doctor Strange was a delightfully weird and trippy experience that brought out a real artistry that's often been lacking in previous MCU outings.

Doctor Strange might be one of the weaker MCU movies, but Scott Derickson certainly shouldn't have the slightest bit of regret about his work on the film. In fact, thanks to his strong direction he's arguably gives Benedict Cumberbatch competition as the film's MVP.
