31. Black Widow (2021)

Black Widow Scarlett Johansson Florence Pugh
Marvel Studios

Released ten years too late, Black Widow acted as the first chapter in Phase Four of the MCU, and got it off to a shaky start. Though Scarlett Johansson and newcomer Florence Pugh are up to the challenge, the film itself is too jumbled to match them.

Set after the events of Civil War, the espionage thriller follows Natasha Romanov as she fights to free her fellow Black Widows from a cruel and violent system, whilst attempting to put her chequered past behind her. Natasha's development is sharp, adding poignancy to her sacrifice in Endgame, but everything else stumbles.

Dampened by poor CGI and Ray Winston's flimsy villain, the film's predictable non-ending and desperate bid to set up future stories suffocates an otherwise effective character study. Natasha soars, but she also deserved better.
