Every MCU Origin Story Ranked From Worst To Best

8. Thor

Captain Marvel Black Panther Iron Man

Thor was undeniably one of the toughest origin stories to nail, and Kevin Feige was incredibly smart to hire Kenneth Branagh of all filmmakers to tease every drop of Shakespearean grandiosity out of it.

An unexpectedly hilarious fish-outta-water tale set mostly on Earth, Thor subverts expectations in a number of ways, but succeeds thanks to the larger-than-life performances of Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, and Anthony Hopkins.

It's nobody's favourite MCU origin story, but between its gorgeous world-building - particularly during the Asgard sequences - and absolute refusal to take itself too seriously, it's a solidly enjoyable effort.

Thor went to far greater places in the future and the romance between him and Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) is absolutely dead-on-arrival, but Branagh's film nimbly, confidently brought a tricky superhero into the burgeoning franchise.
