The original leader of HYDRA, Johann Schmidt served as a Nazi during the Second World War, with aspirations to become the ultimate being. In hopes of achieving his goal, he used the Super Soldier Serum on himself, and though it granted him superhuman abilities, it also caused him to become horribly disfigured and stuck with the name Red Skull.

Later, he sought out the Tesseract in hopes it would grant him the necessary power to take over the world, and came fact-to-face with the true Super Solider, Captain America.

Red Skull had all of the Captain's abilities, including increased strength, agility, and healing, but none of this was enough to beat his inflated ego - something which led to him becoming the Stone Keeper after touching the Tesseract with his bare hands.
