10. Venom
Venom seemed to confound and confuse critics when it was released in 2018, who simply couldn't understand what it was trying to be. Let us explain:
Venom is ridiculous. Venom is weird. Venom is laugh-out-loud funny. Venom is action-packed. Venom is never, ever boring. Venom is surprisingly subversive. Above all, Venom is a lot more clever than anyone gives it credit for.
The decision to make the Venom symbiote as much of a loser as Eddie Brock, rather than the boringly bad-ass monster everyone expected, was a genius move. The film also looks superb, with some delightfully goopy special effects.
According to Tom Hardy, there was an even better version of the film left on the cutting room floor, full of "mad puppeteering" and "dark comedy". Hopefully we'll see more of that in the sequel, Let There Be Carnage.
