Every Philip Seymour Hoffman Movie Ranked Worst To Best

11. Max - Mary And Max (2009)

The only animation that Hoffman lent his voice to, Mary and Max is a beautiful and tragic stop-motion drama in which the actor portrays Max, a middle-aged Jewish man with Asperger's syndrome who forms a bond with a young Australian pen pal (Toni Collette).

Mary and Max is quite possibly Hoffman's most unique and certainly his most heart-wrenchingly tragic movie, detailing one man's emotional struggles as he grapples with the state of his life and his lack of stable relationships. Though it's a voice role, Hoffman brings his signature vulnerability and complexity to the role, and crafts around his character a story as achingly human as it is wonderfully sweet.
