Every Roald Dahl Movie Adaptation Ranked Worst To Best
6. The BFG (1989)
The book that introduced to us such delightfully daft made-up Dahl words as snozzcumber, frobscottle and whizzpopping was transferred to the small screen in Brian Cosgrove’s made-for-TV movie in 1989 and while the film’s animation may be a tad simple by today’s standards – especially compared to Steven Spielberg’s recent CGI heavy retelling – that only adds to its throwback charm.
Produced by Cosgrove Hall Films with studio favourite David Jason (who also voiced the titular characters in the studio’s cartoons Count Duckula and Danger Mouse, for any British 80s kids out there) bringing his rascally voice to the Big Friendly Giant, the movie earned itself the honour of being one of the few made during Dahl’s lifetime that actually got his seal of approval: after the film was screened to Dahl and his family, Cosgrove and Co were treated to a round of applause from the author himself.
