Back in 1977 - 25 years before Tobey Maguire pulled on his Spidey suit - the pilot episode of The Amazing Spider-Man TV series became the first of the trilogy of movies released by Columbia Pictures, missing the fact that they were never really up to a cinematic release.

The pilot/movie is achingly 70s, corny and cheaply made, and it's no real surprise that the show was cancelled after only 13 episodes with Stan Lee's criticisms loudly ringing in everyone's ears.

You can tell watching it that this is very much from the period before Superman: The Movie reinvented what screen superheroism could be, and while expecting too much from it is foolish, it's still hard to ignore the failings. There's only limited action - with no web-slinging like the rest of the trilogy - the acting leaves a lot to be desired and the plot is just silly.

It's essential only for completists.
