Every Stephen King Movie Ranked Worst To Best

9. The Mist (2007)

A glimpse of just one of many creatures in The Mist
MGM Distribution Co.

There are few King adaptations with hopeful undertones, though fewer still are bleaker than Frank Darabont's The Mist.

Taking the basic premise of King's novella - a small town is engulfed in fog and besieged by hidden monsters - the film mounts an unflinching look at human evil, religious fanaticism and sacrifice with a star-studded cast (including Thomas Jane and Marcia Gay Harden) unperturbed by the horrors of Darabont's vision.

Looking back, this may be the only King adaptation more horrifying than its source material, with a finale so brutal it leaves no room for peace of mind. With genuine scares and bracing violence, The Mist is a film as unsettling as the monsters that inhabit it - both human and otherworldly.
