6. The Dead Zone (1983)
So: Would you go back in time and kill Hitler if you could? That's the basic premise of The Dead Zone, which follows a man capable of seeing peoples' future, an ability that allows him to learn that the future US President will destroy the planet.
Starring a haunted Christopher Walken and an arrogant, authoritarian Martin Sheen, the real star of The Dead Zone is director David Cronenberg (this being one of his most underappreciated jewels), who injects the thriller with such apocalyptic vision that even its quietest moments roar with impending doom.
Politically charged, horribly relevant and, in the end, very tragic, The Dead Zone has it all, from its jolts of terror to intimate character work, and the results are simply unforgettable.
