Every Steve McQueen Movie Ranked Worst To Best

1. Mangrove (2020)

12 Years A Slave
BBC

Mangrove was the first instalment to Steve McQueen's five-part Small Axe anthology, and stands tall as not just the best in the series, but the director's very best project full stop.

A courtroom drama that viscerally recounts the 1971 trial of the Mangrove Nine, a group of Black British protestors charged with starting a riot, the film angrily assesses the institutionalised racism that plagued their arrest and trial, but also paints a vivid and empowering portrait of community strength in the face of seemingly unbeatable odds.

With a committed cast led by Letitia Wright and straightforward, fast-moving direction from McQueen, Mangrove refuses to leave any rock unturned, tells its story from every conceivable angle, and in the process makes for one of the most powerful movies on offer.

Steve McQueen has made some truly great films in his short but impressive career, but Mangrove is effortlessly the best of them all.
