Every Steven Soderbergh Movie Ranked Worst To Best

17. The Girlfriend Experience (2009)

Oceans Eleven
Magnolia Pictures

A misunderstood gem, The Girlfriend Experience casts Sasha Grey as a high-class escort called Christine, who specialises in girlfriend experiences - acting as a client's partner whilst they're together.

The film's plot is loose and powerful, as Soderbergh charts Christine's day-to-day life on the backdrop of the 2008 Presidential election and America's financial crisis, both of which are effecting her workload.

A character study brought to life by its fraught New York setting and Grey's moving lead performance, The Girlfriend Experience is a film made to capture a time and place when all was not well in the world, and how society's burdens came to effect people from every walk of life.

It's sometimes on the nose with its themes, but all told The Girlfriend Experience works perfectly as an insightful look at our money-driven culture.
