Every Steven Soderbergh Movie Ranked Worst To Best

9. Behind The Candelabra (2013)

Oceans Eleven
HBO

Based on Scott Thorson's memoir of his time with legendary pianist Liberace, Behind the Candelabra serves as a warm and affectionate charting of celebrity lonliness, star-crossed lovers and the trials of fame, addiction and regret.

Michael Douglas has never been better in his starring role as Liberace, who he plays as flamboyant and exciting, but also quiet, tragic and longing.

Matt Damon is also on top form as Liberace's sweet and innocent paramour Thorson, counteracting Douglas' portrayal of exuberant fame with quiet sensitivity.

Behind the Candelabra is an uncharacteristically slow and restrained effort from Soderbergh. The film isn't loud or overly ambitious, but it's sharply directed and formed to allow the characters to do the talking and guide the story.

It's a beautiful and heartfelt romance, and one only Soderbergh could have pulled off this well.
