Every Steven Soderbergh Movie Ranked Worst To Best
27. Kafka (1991)
Kafka was Soderbergh's second film, and finds the up-and-coming filmmaker attempting to tell the story of famous writer Franz Kafka whilst simultaneously paying homage to his most renowned works.
Now, there's actually a few things the film has going for it, including a typically game Jeremy Irons in the lead role and an assured black-and-white aesthetic that works with the subject matter overall.
Unfortunately, the whole thing is tainted by the story, which is so obviously unsure of what it wants to be or achieve that its themes end up tripping over one another, unable to settle on a plot thread or commit to its bonkers narrative.
Like a handful of Soderbergh's most disappointing ventures, Kafka has all the makings of great film, but Soderbergh is never able to find it amongst the rabble.
