12. X-Men: Apocalypse

X Men Ranking
20th Century Fox

X-Men: Apocalypse isn't as bad as some say. It took the relatively difficult concept of an all-powerful mutant and attempted to make it work within the established canon. The film also introduced characters such as Storm, Angel, Nightcrawler, Jubilee, and Psylocke in a relatively organic matter.

The main thing the film suffers from is plot coincidences and its over-reliance on star power.

Due to the popularity of Jennifer Lawrence, Mystique's character was thrust into the center stage without much consideration as to why the character would be in that position. The final conflict between Apocalypse himself is also undermined as the narrative conveniently eliminates Nightcrawler and Quicksilver.

Magneto's poorly-handled arc is bizarre as well as the audience is led to believe that he started another family that he ultimately loses and then turns to Apocalypse's side. This betrayal contradicts the reveal that Quicksilver is in fact his son meaning that he had already abandoned one family and was willing to kill his own offspring.

Similar to The Wolverine, Apocalypse also suffers from false promises due to the final shot of comic book accurate costumes for the main cast. These outfits would never surface again despite the demand from fans to diverge from the generic leather jumpsuits.
