Some of the best villains are the ones that have more personal motivations rather than simply grand overarching ideas of dominion or power exchange. The Wolverine's Shingen falls into the former category.

A mutant-hating, power-hungry businessman, but he's got the edge of being disappointed by his father's fascination with mutants and his deference to himself, which is exacerbated by his fears that his own daughter will be named Ichiro's successor in his will. Naturally, he seeks to kill her to prevent that, making him just about the most Shakespearean of all of the franchise's villains.

In an otherwise quite dull movie, he's a complex highlight and the act that he boasts impressive sword-fighting skills and gets a pretty epic death scene definitely helps elevate him.
