Fantastic Beasts 2 Trailer Reactions: 8 Ups & 3 Downs
5. The Hinted Past
Naturally, when it was revealed that The Crimes Of Grindelwald wouldn't explicitly deal with the relationship between the villain and Dumbledore that JK Rowling retrospectively revealed after the publication of the Harry Potter books there was huge outrage. This was an opportunity for a progressive LGBT storyline in a mainstream movie that would be seen by lots of families - this was a major chance for normalisation and they seemed to be passing it up.
But as Rowling subsequently reiterated, this is a series and there's no need to reveal all cards in the first installment of a multi-film arc. And, rather cleverly, the trailer does hint of the history between the two men as a means of appeasement.
Though there are multiple reasons why Dumbledore is unable to intervene with Grindelwald (politics and his own guilt at helping foster his dangerous ideas, primarily), there's also the suggestion that their closeness would make it difficult. And even implicitly hinting at that is a good move to suggest that the films WILL explore their relationship in some form.
