Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald Final Trailer Reaction: 8 Ups & 2 Downs
3. Law Nails Dumbledore (Again)
The casting of Jude Law as Dumbledore was initially a little hard to take considering the fact that Jared Harris exists and has Dumbledore's actual face, but everything that's been shown so far of the performance suggests he's absolutely the right man for the huge job. We've already seen him sexing Dumbledore up (simply by being really, really ridiculously good-looking) and everyone knows that he has the necessary level of charm, but there are more subtle things required of the performance.
Thankfully, this trailer showed flashes of those subtle elements. It might have been easy to simply cast Law as a war-time Dumbledore, slightly sharper, slightly harder around the edges and not yet given the charm and affectionate gloss of age and wisdom, but that's not the case here.
This Dumbledore - with his suggestion that a safe house on a deadly mission exists in order to get in a spot of tea - is exactly the reverse trajectory of the older version. He's clearly got that same roguish, silly edge that made his elder iteration so forgivable for basically marching Harry off to his death and Law already deserves credit for that.
