Furious 7 Review: 15 Reasons It's The Best In The Series
5. ...But More Of It Was Filmed Practically Than You Think
Even though every other film released this summer is going to struggle to compete with Furious 7's absurdity, you'd be surprised how much of the film's stunt work was actually filmed practically. A fascinating featurette explains that the plane drop sequence was achieved practically for the most part, dropping empty cars out of the planes and sending skydivers with cameras fixed to their heads out after them. Of course, CGI was used for physically impossible shots and the actors weren't actually present in the cars, but given how many assumed it was simply all achieved digitally, it's insanely ambitious. Similarly, the crazy Ferrari dive through the skyscrapers isn't entirely digital either: a Ferrari was flown through a glass window and several platforms, which served as a stand-in for the skyscrapers themselves. Again, though, many will just presume the entire thing was a digital creation, when a good deal more sweat went into it than that. Given how much of the success of these last three movies can be accounted for by the tendency for practical effects where possible, hopefully they'll stick to this formula moving forward.
